After a three-year effort led by the Historic Preservation Advisory Board, Tiverton became a Preserve America Community in May of 2011. This government program recognizes communities that protect and celebrate their heritage; use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization; and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs.
The Historic Preservation Advisory Board advises the Town in all matters concerning the historical preservation of architectural and archeological resources and development of the Town. The Board provides advice and assistance on preservation of these historical resources and elevates the community's knowledge and appreciation of them by means of education and outreach programs.
Tiverton Historic Sites:
THPAB has updated an Historic Sites Map, listing over twenty properties in Town with a brief description of their historical significance and location.
In addition, photographic exhibits at the Town Hall and public presentations on historic sites and areas in Town are part of the Board’s education program.
Historic Sites GIS Map:
Known historic sites/properties are available on the Town's GIS website. If you follow this link, once on the site, on the left side of the screen is an option for "Layers", then check the Historic Sites Map box. All known sites will then be flagged in brown.
Historic Property Owners:
THPAB has created a BROCHURE with information regarding the purpose of restoring and maintaining an historic property, including a list of resources to help with this.
Historic Property Plaque Program:
THPAB has compiled a LIST of historic properties in Tiverton which have significant architecture true to their era, specifically older than 1925, including those listed in the 1983 State Preliminary Report of Tiverton's Architectural Resources. If you own a building on this list and wish to have an historical plaque, complete this FORM with any pertinent information for the building in your request (i.e., date, original owner, etc). Upon request receipt, THPAB will conduct research to verify the date and original owner/occupant and issue a response form to you for payment for your request ($40 per plaque). The plaque(s) will be ordered upon receipt of payment. Completed plaques are accompanied with mounting hardware and a brief history of the building and/or historic occupants and/or deed excerpts. They may be picked up in the Town Clerk's Office after you receive notification of completion from THPAB.
Membership Criteria:
The Historic Preservation Advisory Board shall consist of five (5) members, all of whom have expertise and/or interest in historical site and building preservation. All members shall be appointed by the Town Council. Members shall serve for three (3) year terms and the appointments shall be staggered so that no more than two (2) terms expire in any single year.
